Keeping a trailer in good working order between trips doesn't require a full shop - it requires having the right small components on hand when something needs attention. A dust cap that cracked over winter. A grease fitting that stripped during a bearing service. A U-bolt that corroded through after three seasons of road salt. These are the repairs that get deferred when the parts aren't available, and that deferral is usually how minor maintenance becomes a roadside problem.

Hub Maintenance: Grease Caps, Dust Caps, and Oil Caps

The wheel end is where trailer maintenance matters most. Contaminated or dried-out bearings are the leading cause of trailer hub failures - and every failure starts with a compromised seal at the hub cap.

Dust Caps

Standard dust caps press into the hub bore and keep road debris and moisture away from the bearing grease. They're pried off during bearing inspections and are worth replacing rather than reinstalling a cap that shows deformation or cracking.

  • 4-bolt hubs - 1.943" O.D., zinc plated
  • 5, 6, or 8-bolt hubs - 2.446" O.D.
  • Standard trailer hub dust caps - two size variants stocked individually

E-Z Lube Grease Caps

E-Z Lube caps include a rubber plug in the center bore that accepts a grease gun tip directly, letting you add grease to the hub without removing the cap. Available in pairs and 10-packs for shops or fleet maintenance needs.

Grease Caps with Zerk Fittings

Similar function to E-Z Lube - a Zerk fitting threaded into the cap allows direct grease gun access to the hub interior. Available as singles and pairs. The Sure-Lube and Reliable Sure-Lube grease caps (2.44" O.D.) are spring-loaded versions that maintain positive pressure inside the hub - comparable to Bearing Buddy-style protection with the added convenience of a Zerk fitting for quick service.

Fortress Aluminum Oil Cap Kits

For trailers running oil-bath hubs rather than grease-packed hubs, the Fortress complete aluminum oil cap replacement kits are the correct service item. Oil-bath hubs are common on heavier axles - Dexter, Rockwell, and Lippert use them on mid-range and heavy-duty trailer axle platforms. Three Fortress kits in this collection cover the full range of common oil-bath axle capacities:

  • 5,200-8,000 lb axles - threaded aluminum cap, O-ring, and plug
  • 9,000-12,000 lb axles - bolt-on aluminum cap kit
  • 10,000-16,000 lb axles - threaded aluminum cap kit

Aluminum oil caps are more corrosion-resistant than the OEM plastic or zinc caps they replace and are the standard upgrade spec on axles that see frequent submersion or coastal salt exposure. Sold individually - one cap per hub.

Dexter Axle Oil Cap Kit

The Dexter oil cap, O-ring, and plug kit is a direct replacement for standard Dexter oil-bath hubs, sold as a pair covering both hubs on one axle.

Hub Service Tools

Rigid Hitch Hub Removal Tool (RH-2610) - Made in the USA. A dedicated trailer hub puller designed to extract hubs from spindles without damaging the spindle threads or bearing surfaces. Hubs that have been in service for years under load and salt exposure bond to the spindle - this tool applies controlled extraction force rather than the improvised alternatives that damage the spindle.

Lock-on Grease Coupler - Performance Tool W-54228. Locks onto Zerk fittings rather than just pushing on, preventing the coupler from popping off under grease gun pressure. Straightforward upgrade from a standard push coupler for anyone doing regular bearing service.

Grease fitting assortment - Mixed Zerk fittings in common thread sizes. Stripped or corroded grease fittings on trailer leaf spring shackles, brake hardware, and hitch components are a routine replacement item.


Fasteners and Hardware

U-Bolt Kits

U-bolt kit, 10-pack - U-bolts clamp the leaf spring pack to the axle seat and are a routine replacement item when rebuilding or inspecting a leaf spring suspension. Corroded or bent U-bolts allow the axle to shift position under load - a condition that's easy to miss visually but measurable in uneven tire wear and handling.

Tow Ring Bolt Kit

5/8" tow ring bolt kit - Grade hardware for mounting receiver-mounted tow rings to trailer frames and heavy-duty tow points. Tow rings carry high dynamic loads and require fasteners rated for the application.

Nuts, Bolts, and Clips

  • Self-tapping screws, #8 - 25 pack - For trailer wall panels, light mounting, and general sheet metal work
  • Golf cart wheel lug nuts, set of 4 - 1/2" x 20 SAE thread, for EZ-Go, Club Car, and Par Car platforms

Tools

Drill Bits and Cutting Tools

Left-handed drill bit set, 13 piece - Left-handed bits rotate in reverse, which means they cut against a broken fastener as they advance. In many cases the bit catches the broken stud and backs it out before drilling through entirely - eliminating the need for an easy-out or thread repair kit. The right first tool for a broken bolt situation.

Black oxide jobber drill, 3/8" x 5" long - An extra-length straight drill for reaching into recessed locations on trailer frames and hitch mounting points.

9/16" drill bit - Standard size for hitch mounting bolt holes and common trailer hardware.

1/2" drill bit - Standard size for through-bolt applications in trailer brackets and frame hardware.

Hand Tools and Drive Tools

L-style wrench - A compact L-hex wrench for tight-access fastener work in trailer component installations.

Power tool extension bars - For extending drill or impact driver reach into recessed locations where a standard chuck won't fit.

1-1/8" impact socket - A common size for trailer lug nuts and spindle nut service on larger axles.

Opti-Brite square LED wide-angle flood beam work light, 12-24V - A hardwire or direct-connect version operating on 12-24V DC, suitable for mounting in a trailer shop bay, under a truck bed, or on a service vehicle. Wide-angle flood pattern at a lower price point than the portable unit.
